Bird on a Bough

 8 x 10 x 1 1/4" oil on stretched canvas.  The bird might be wondering what in the world is happening to us right now between fire, poor air quality, running out of water, poor governance, viruses run amok and a general state of dystopia.

Lucy and Sam Going Somewhere

 On the Road again, oil on canvas 20x20.  Golden Gate Bridge in the distance.  What's wrong with this picture???

Stranded

Oil on hand-stretched Belgian 66J linen 28x22.  Image of the blonde based on a photo snapped on a road trip in Morocco around 1969 or 1970 when surfer friend picked me up from my pension in Spain with his VW and surf board and we travelled down to Rabat.  Interesting trip!  Background is from a more recent visit to New Mexico - the countryside where Georgia O'Keefe liked to paint.  Beautiful skies.

Bluebird of Happiness Mixed Media Artwork

I thought I'd create some interesting art with grandsons Wilson and Cole Taylor when they were visiting, but Wilson only drew a few items on this sheet of 24" w x 18" h watercolor paper.  The twins were too busy playing in the creek to do much art.  Now that I've finally finished the latest quilt (with eighty separate 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" photos appliqued into it) - more on that later, I thought I'd follow whatever quirky thing manifested itself and do some more work on paper.  I ended up with this mixed media piece which includes pencil, graphite, ink, watercolor, gouache, acrylic and various papers, including some old printed photos.  It represents a lifetime of seeking the Bluebird of Happiness.

Something Kooky

"Bird Girl," a little acrylic and oil painting on 8x10 fabric on board.  Repainting old never finished work sometimes takes an unusual turn.

Some New Winter Seattle Art

Top to Bottom:
1.   Pen & Ink and Watercolor portrait of sulky grandson Cole Taylor.  His nose is too long in the painting, as can be seen from the photo below it.  That might have been because we were reading the book Pinocchio!  Cole was not as willing to pose as his twin brother so this is the only time I had to paint him.
2.  Watercolor painting of Wilson, which doesn't do him justice, as can be seen from the photo of him above the artwork.
3.  Pen & Ink and watercolor and pastel pencil portrait of Wilson in his sport shirt.  He looks a bit like a Nazi youth in this picture, which Wilson said was "creepy."  It does not look much like the photo of Wilson above the art, holding up the world with his dyed red Mohawk hairdo. 
4.  An Abstract, inspired by going to Discovery Park in Seattle, one of my favorite places to hike
5.  A Memory Abstract of my week in Seattle ends the tableau.

Painting in the Sun

What happens when you paint on a hot, sunny day in an outdoors studio:
"Sun Flower Cross Section" 9x12 paper on 1 1/2" cradled board.  R&F oil sticks and oil paints.

Big Mouth

Two new oil, cold wax and graphite paintings each on 12x16 inch encausticbord (on 1" cradled wood panels) painted as a diptych (bottom) but presentable as two separate paintings - Big MouthA (top) and BigMouthB (middle).  Painted on a hot, sunny day in California in my outdoor studio as I channeled my love of the sun!

On the occasion of my mother's upcoming 96th birthday, I thought I'd post some of her beautiful watercolors, starting with this one:  Probably a May day bouquet, of which she painted many over the years.

Childhood Memories

Finished oil painting yesterday. 36" x 36" oil on canvas.  I painted over "The Big Wave," without taking a photo of the under painting I thought I had finished in 2012.  Now it is lost forever.  I like this one better.

Circles and Squares

Recently in Seattle, 3-year-old Cole Taylor helped me draw a hotel with circles and squares.  That sketch inspired this 7x10 mixed media abstract.
